Unpredictable Jeonbuk Weather, 'There Was a Reason~'... Due to Cold and Dry Air Data provided by Jeonju Meteorological Office

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gominhyeong] The erratic weather in Jeonbuk this spring is analyzed to be due to cold and dry air located in the upper layers.

According to the "Jeonbuk 2020 Spring Weather Characteristics" announced by the Jeonju Meteorological Office on the 3rd, the average temperature in March (7.8℃ / normal 5.9℃) was very high, ranking third highest since 1973, but April saw many chilly days (10.4℃ / 12.1℃), plummeting to the third lowest (46th highest).

Last month (18.0℃ / 17.6℃, 19th highest) rose slightly above normal again, showing large temperature fluctuations this spring.

The cause of the large temperature variation in March and April was analyzed as follows: in March, cold air was trapped in the Arctic while temperatures in the Siberian region remained more than 2℃ above normal, weakening the cold and dry Siberian high pressure.

On the other hand, in April, warm air stagnated northwest of Lake Baikal, strengthening the north-south flow and frequently bringing cold air from the northwest.

In May, with frequent rain, the stagnation broke, and precipitation bands periodically approached from the west, resulting in many precipitation days (May precipitation days 10.3 days / normal 8.3 days), and frequent cloudy days made it feel relatively cool.

Regarding the wind, the pressure difference between the northern/upper cold air and southern/lower warm air around Korea increased, causing more days with strong winds than last year.

In particular, very strong winds blew from March 15 to 19, April 25, May 9 to 12, and May 18 to 19, causing wildfires in various parts of Jeonbuk.

Spring yellow dust, which normally occurs about 5.5 days in Jeonbuk, was not observed this year.

A Jeonju Meteorological Office official said, "The average temperature in Jeonbuk in May was 18.0℃, higher than the normal (17.6±0.3℃), and the precipitation in Jeonbuk was 92.3 mm, similar to the normal range (70.5 to 108.4 mm)."
