[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) has declared war on illegal garbage dumping.
Following the proclamation of the "2020 Garbage-Free Dong-gu" inaugural year last January, Dong-gu announced on the 3rd that it plans to strengthen joint public-private crackdowns on habitual illegal dumping areas by implementing a cleaning responsibility system through the "Village Environment Volunteer Group."
This crackdown will be conducted jointly by the district, the "Village Environment Volunteer Group" composed of 13 neighborhoods to eradicate illegal dumping, and the delegated household waste collection and transportation companies.
After a guidance period this month, the crackdown will be continuously carried out from the 1st of next month until illegal dumping is eradicated.
To strengthen the crackdown, in addition to the existing regular crackdown team, two special management areas vulnerable to illegal dumping and two special crackdown teams have been newly formed for each neighborhood, focusing on garbage-prone areas such as commercial districts and one-room apartment clusters.
During the crackdown period, patrol crackdowns using CCTV and vehicle black boxes will be conducted, along with a mobile crackdown team performing late-night inspections, and citywide public awareness activities such as distributing promotional leaflets and hanging banners will be carried out.
For illegally dumped garbage and mixed recyclable waste, collection refusal stickers will be attached, and strong administrative measures such as fines up to 1 million won will be imposed on offenders.
Additionally, each neighborhood will set garbage reduction indicators and conduct monitoring to select outstanding neighborhoods, institutions, and organizations for rewards, and actively provide incentives such as installing separated recycling bins, distributing volume-based waste bags, and designating exemplary clean businesses.
Mayor Im Taek of Dong-gu said, "We ask for the active cooperation of residents in this joint crackdown aimed at reducing illegal and household waste," and added, "We will continue to create a clean and pleasant Dong-gu through ongoing and diverse cleaning administrative innovations together with residents."
