Statistics Korea, April Online Shopping Trends
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has significantly increased online food service shopping, including delivery food, in April this year.
According to the April online shopping trends announced by Statistics Korea on the 3rd, the online shopping transaction amount was 12.0026 trillion KRW, up 12.5% compared to the same month last year. Among the online shopping transaction amount, mobile shopping was recorded at 7.9621 trillion KRW, an increase of 18.4%.
In particular, the increase in food services was steep. Due to changes in consumption behavior caused by COVID-19, transactions for delivery food, fresh food, and easy-to-cook meals increased by 83.7%. Agricultural, livestock, and fishery products (69.6%), food and beverages (43.6%), daily necessities (36.0%), and home appliances, electronics, and communication devices (19.0%) also showed an increasing trend. On the other hand, cultural and leisure services (-85.8%) and travel and transportation services (-69.6%) decreased.
The mobile shopping transaction amount was 7.9621 trillion KRW, an increase of 18.4% compared to the same month last year. The share of mobile in total transaction amount rose by 3.3 percentage points to 66.3%. The share of mobile shopping transaction amount was highest in food services (94.2%), e-coupon services (88.5%), and bags (77.6%), in that order.
