"Request for Continuous Monitoring Without Gaps Even During the COVID-19 Situation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Eom Jaesik, Chairman of the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, inspected the installation and operation status of radiation monitoring devices for recycled scrap metal and urged thorough surveillance.
On the 3rd, Chairman Eom visited the Hyundai Steel factory in Incheon and made these remarks. This company handles the largest amount of recycled scrap metal in South Korea.
After inspecting the recycled scrap metal, he encouraged continuous monitoring without disruption despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NSSC has installed and operates 128 radiation monitoring devices at major ports and harbors nationwide to monitor recycled scrap metal contaminated with radiation.
Separately, the installation and operation of radiation monitoring devices are mandatory for companies directly handling recycled scrap metal, with 57 devices operating at 18 business sites nationwide.
Chairman Eom said, "It is very important to preemptively block recycled scrap metal contaminated with radiation from circulating domestically," and added, "I hope efforts will be made to ensure there are no gaps in radiation monitoring activities even during the COVID-19 situation."
