Suncheon-si Selected for Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Smart Solution Challenge Contest Project

Promotion of Smart Response Management Solution Project for Illegal Parking at Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Suncheon-si Selected for Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Smart Solution Challenge Contest Project

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City was selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘Smart City-type Urban Regeneration Project’ last year, and this year it was selected for the ‘Smart Solution Challenge’ project.

The ‘Smart Challenge’ is a project where companies, citizens, and local governments join forces to solve urban problems such as transportation, environment, and safety. Depending on the scale, it is divided into City, Town, and Solution categories, and Suncheon City was selected in the ‘Smart Solution Challenge’ category.

Recently, due to the government’s low-carbon and fine dust reduction policies, the use of electric vehicles has surged annually. However, social awareness of electric vehicle charging stations remains low, resulting in illegal parking of general vehicles at charging stations and ongoing complaints. To improve citizen awareness and resolve inconveniences caused by illegal parking at electric vehicle charging stations, Suncheon City will establish the ‘Smart Response Management Solution for Illegal Parking at Electric Vehicle Charging Stations’ system.

The project budget is a total of 600 million KRW (300 million KRW from the national government and 300 million KRW from the city), and the city plans to build the ‘Smart Response Management Solution for Illegal Parking at Electric Vehicle Charging Stations’ by the end of the year.

Once the system is established, it will automatically identify whether a vehicle parked at an electric vehicle charging station is an electric vehicle. If a general vehicle is parked, it will guide the driver to move to another parking area by indicating ‘This is an electric vehicle charging station.’ For vehicles that continue to park illegally, enforcement functions will be provided. Additionally, a smart platform will be introduced that enables continuous self-diagnosis of the entire system and rapid recovery in case of malfunctions.

A Suncheon City official stated, “Through this project, we plan to move away from uniform law enforcement and raise citizens’ awareness through prior guidance before enforcement. We will also resolve user complaints by efficiently operating electric vehicle charging stations.”
