Despite COVID-19, 71.6 Billion Won Contract Signed for Kim Export to Japan...Record High

[Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 2nd that at the '26th Korea-Japan Gim Export Bidding and Consultation Meeting' held on the 28th of last month, it achieved a record-high export contract for gim worth approximately 71.6 billion KRW (a 20.9% increase compared to the previous year).

The bidding and consultation meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Tokyo, Japan, but was conducted via non-face-to-face video conferencing due to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The export contract volume signed this time totals 854 million sheets, including 540 million sheets of dried gim and 350 million sheets of processed gim products. This accounts for 87.5% of the products submitted by 46 participating Korean companies and represents a 25.1% increase in volume compared to last year's contract volume of 682 million sheets.

Woo Dong-sik, Director of International Deep-Sea Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, stated, "This was possible because our government and the Korea Fisheries Trade Association closely communicated and actively managed quality and hygiene, which are the top concerns of Japanese importers." He added, "Additionally, the increased demand for processed gim products in Japanese households due to COVID-19 also appears to have contributed to some extent."
