[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] New York City has also decided to implement a nighttime curfew in response to violent protests against the death of George Floyd.
On the 1st (local time), New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the implementation of a nighttime curfew. The curfew hours are from 11 PM to 5 AM the following day.
This decision came after some luxury stores and shops near the Soho area suffered damages following protests held at Union Square in Lower Manhattan on the night of the 30th of last month.
Governor Cuomo expressed concern, saying, "There are those in New York City who take advantage of moments of chaos. There was an opportunity to steal, and that was last night. If you were an extremist wanting to preach anarchy, that was the night."
Mayor de Blasio also explained, "We respect and support peaceful protests. Messages conveyed through violence are unacceptable. To prevent property damage from violence tonight, the governor and I have decided on a full curfew."
Protests are also taking place at Union Square today, raising concerns about the possibility of violent incidents during the night. According to local media, the New York Police Department has doubled security personnel in the Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan areas, which have suffered from violent incidents.
