Yeongdeungpo-gu and Seoul Metro Sign Business Agreement to Create Cultural and Art Spaces and Improve Surrounding Environment at Aging Subway Stations... Yeongdeungpo Market Station B1 and B2 Floors to Transform into Rest Areas for Commuters Enjoying Culture Starting July
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) signed a business agreement on the 1st with Seoul Metro (President Kim Sang-beom) to create cultural and artistic spaces in subway stations within the district and improve the surrounding environment.
Through the agreement, both organizations agreed to ▲ discover and support mutual cooperation projects for the development of subway stations and their surrounding environments within the district ▲ operate and engage in activities related to the creation of cultural and artistic environments ▲ establish and activate a win-win council involving the local community, youth, artists, and social entrepreneurs ▲ and collaborate on other efforts to revitalize and expand the cultural and artistic base in Seoul and Yeongdeungpo.
Seoul Metro has planned to build a cultural and artistic platform to transform 14 aging subway stations into open cultural and artistic spaces by 2021. Among these, Yeongdeungpo Market Station on Line 5, located in the district, is being developed as a space that reflects cultural and artistic trends and the unique characteristics of Yeongdeungpo.
The basement levels 1 and 2 of Yeongdeungpo Market Station will be the first spaces to change through this agreement. Since October last year, the district has held business consultations with Seoul Metro, the Cultural Foundation, and the Yeongdeungpo Social Economy Network to organize the space and promote projects, and has concretized detailed work coordination and project plans for pilot operation in the future.
Accordingly, the Line 5 Yeongdeungpo Market Station cultural and artistic platform will open in July. Centered here, youth, artists, and social entrepreneurs will create various cultural and artistic contents together with the local community, providing citizens with opportunities to enjoy culture and arts within the district.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Through this Yeongdeungpo Market Station cultural and artistic environment creation project, we aim to transform the subway station into a cultural space in daily life where people can enjoy culture and arts during their commute,” and added, “We will strive to establish a win-win council with local youth, artists, social entrepreneurs, and residents so that it can become a resting place for the residents.”
