President Moon: "Korean New Deal is the National Transformation Future Vision of the Republic of Korea"

Comprehensive Korean New Deal Plan to Be Announced in July: "Will Include a Much More Inclusive and Larger-Scale Long-Term Vision"

[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] President Moon Jae-in defined the "Korean New Deal" during his closing remarks at the 6th Emergency Economic Meeting held at the Blue House on the 1st as "a future vision that goes beyond simply being one of the projects to overcome the crisis phase or one of the future tasks, achieving a total transformation of the Republic of Korea as a nation."

Blue House spokesperson Kang Min-seok explained, "President Moon urged that the comprehensive plan for the Korean New Deal, to be announced in July, should 'contain a much more comprehensive and large-scale, long-term vision.'" Ahead of the concrete completion of the comprehensive plan, President Moon gave two instructions.

Spokesperson Kang explained, "First, to enrich the content through collaboration among the ruling party, government, and the Blue House, and second, to establish a government-wide implementation system."

President Moon first presented the concept of the Korean New Deal at the 5th Emergency Economic Meeting on April 22. Following his special speech on the 3rd anniversary of his inauguration on the 10th of last month, where he revealed the Korean New Deal plan centered on the Digital New Deal, he decided on the 20th of last month to add the Green New Deal to the scope of the Korean New Deal.

Spokesperson Kang said, "Recently, President Moon instructed to further supplement the concept of the Korean New Deal once again, completing the blueprint," adding, "The content that President Moon privately instructed to supplement was to base the Korean New Deal on the value of a people-first and inclusive nation as its 'foundation.'"

Spokesperson Kang stated, "As President Moon mentioned in his opening remarks today, the Korean New Deal will stand on two pillars?Digital New Deal and Green New Deal?built on a solid employment safety net," and added, "In his closing remarks, President Moon made one more special request to the officials of the ruling party, government, and the Blue House."

Regarding this, President Moon said, "In every crisis phase, gaps in (people’s) lives have widened during the overcoming process," noting, "Polarization deepened during the foreign exchange crisis, and gaps widened again through the financial crisis." He emphasized, "We must not allow gaps to widen again in overcoming this COVID-19 crisis," and stressed, "Now is the time for the gaps to narrow (in the process of overcoming the crisis)."

President Moon asked the officials of the ruling party, government, and the Blue House to build a consensus.

President Moon expressed gratitude, saying, "The fiscal authorities have promptly and boldly presented measures." He also evaluated the Democratic Party, saying, "There were many difficulties in making decisions regarding the payment of emergency disaster relief funds to all citizens, but the party coordinated well."
