[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Renault Samsung Motors sold a total of 11,929 units in May, including 10,571 units domestically and 1,358 units for export. This represents an 8.8% decrease compared to the previous month (13,087 units) and a 16.2% decline compared to the same period last year (14,228 units).
Renault Samsung Motors disclosed this information on the 1st through the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system. Domestic sales in May slightly fell by 4% compared to the previous month, but increased by 72.4% compared to the same period last year, reflecting the new car effect of the XM3 and Renault Captur.
The XM3 led overall sales with 8,008 units sold in May alone. Among these, 58.5% of customers chose the top trim, the TCe 260 RE Signature, indicating a continued strong preference for the highest trim level. Since its launch in March, the XM3 has maintained monthly sales of over 5,000 units for three consecutive months, achieving a cumulative sales total of 16,922 units over this period.
The Renault Captur, newly introduced to the domestic market last month, recorded sales of 450 units in its first month. Alongside the XM3 and Renault Captur, the QM6, which forms the core of Renault Samsung Motors' SUV lineup, sold 3,963 units in May, marking a 10.8% increase compared to the previous month and a 71.3% increase compared to the same period last year.
Exports totaled 1,358 units, down 34.5% from the previous month and 83.2% from the same period last year. By model, 1,128 units of the QM6 (export name Koleos) and 230 units of the Renault Twizy were shipped. The Nissan Rogue, which ended its consignment production contract in March, had sold 4,882 units in the same period last year.
EV sales in May are also noteworthy. The SM3 Z.E., the only domestically produced sedan-type electric vehicle in the EV market, sold 92 units in May, a 10.8% increase compared to the same period last year, supported by Renault Samsung Motors' special purchase subsidy of 6 million KRW or a 60-month interest-free benefit. The ultra-compact electric vehicle Renault Twizy sold 79 units last month.
