Citizens Prefer Support for Home Purchase and Rent over Public Housing Supply

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] A survey found that 6 out of 10 households in Korea need government loan support for jeonse (key money deposit) and monthly rent funds or housing purchase funds.

This contrasts with the government's overly strict real estate regulations aimed at stabilizing housing prices. The public prefers practical financial support over regulations.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's survey conducted from June to December last year on a sample of 60,000 households regarding the 2019 housing conditions, 31.2% responded that "loan support for housing purchase funds" is the most necessary housing support program.

Following that, loan support for jeonse funds accounted for 23.5%, and monthly rent support was 11.1%, totaling 65.8% for housing-related financial support.

Responses related to public housing supply such as long-term public rental housing supply (11.9%), public rental housing with purchase option supply (6.5%), and public sale housing supply (5.7%) accounted for only 24.1%.

By occupancy type, homeowners answered that "loan support for housing purchase funds" (52.0%) is the most necessary housing support program.

Jeonse households responded that "loan support for jeonse funds" (36.9%) and "loan support for housing purchase funds" (32.8%) are the most necessary housing support programs.

Monthly rent households selected "loan support for jeonse funds" (30.2%) and "monthly rent fund support" (27.1%) as the most needed.

Regarding satisfaction with public rental housing, 93.5% of households living in public rental housing responded that they are satisfied. The main reasons for satisfaction were "affordable rent (49.0%)" and "not having to move frequently (39.7%)."

However, among those dissatisfied, 16.9% cited "negative perception," indicating a need to improve the public image of public rental housing complexes.
