[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] ○…'Black Pearl' Vijay Singh (Fiji, photo) has decided to withdraw from participating in the PGA Tour Korn Ferry (2nd tier) Tour.
On the 1st (Korean time), the Golf Channel in the United States reported, "We have confirmed from the PGA Tour that 'Singh has decided to withdraw his application to participate in the Korn Ferry Tour'." The tournament is scheduled to be held for four days starting from the 11th at the TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Last month, controversy arose when the 'successful golfer' Singh announced he would compete in the 2nd tier tour. He is a seasoned veteran with 34 wins, including three major championships such as the PGA Championship and the Masters.
His total career earnings amount to $71,216,128 (approximately 87.16 billion KRW), ranking 4th all-time. In fact, the 2nd tier tour is not a suitable level for Singh. It is a place where young players challenge themselves and compete to advance to the regular tour. Due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States, there are no tournaments to attend. During the same period, the PGA Tour Charles Schwab Challenge does not allow him to participate, and the Champions (Senior) Tour for players aged 50 and over will resume in early August.
Brady Schnell (USA), a 2nd tier tour player, criticized on his social media, "If you play in a 2nd tier tour event, you are really trash," and added, "I would say this to your face." Later, after being told that his expression was too harsh, he apologized. On the other hand, Phil Mickelson (USA) defended Singh, saying, "He has the right to play in the tournaments he wants." Singh had planned to compete in the 2nd tier tour held relatively close to his home but ultimately decided to withdraw from the tournament.
