"Power to Overcome National Crisis" ... 'Uibyeong Day' Commemoration Ceremony in Hongseong-gun, Chungnam

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will hold the '10th Uibyeong Day' commemorative ceremony at 11 a.m. on June 1 at the Hongju Eupseong area in Hongseong-gun, Chungnam.

Hongseong-gun (formerly Hongju) is a place where anti-Japanese uibyeong struggles (Eulmi and Byeongo Hongju Uibyeong) were fought twice in 1896 and 1906, and it is also a hometown that produced 227 independence patriots.

The commemorative ceremony will begin with a memorial rite at the Hongju Uisa Shrine, followed by the screening of a video highlighting the historical significance and spirit of the Hongju uibyeong, a Taekwondo performance themed on uibyeong, commemorative and condolence speeches, a chorus of the Uibyeong Song, and a three cheers for victory.

The event will be attended by representatives of nationwide uibyeong organizations, descendants of uibyeong, and local residents. However, to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the number of attendees will be minimized, and infection prevention measures such as disinfection will be implemented.

Uibyeong Day, June 1, is the solar calendar date converted from the lunar calendar date April 22, when Uibyeong leader Gwak Jae-woo first raised the uibyeong during the Imjin War. Since 2010, the government has designated Uibyeong Day as a national memorial day to inherit the noble patriotism of the ancestors who devoted and sacrificed for the country and to reflect on the meaning of uibyeong.

Yoon Jong-in, Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, "Uibyeong symbolizes the overcoming of national crises by the people rising up and fighting on their own," adding, "I hope this event will be an opportunity to unite the hearts of the people, overcome the COVID-19 crisis, and create new hope."
