[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Hee-eun Park] A police officer who continuously provided his mistress with criminal information such as whether she was wanted and failed to arrest her despite being aware of her wanted status was sentenced to imprisonment in the first trial.
On the 31st, Judge So-young Park of Criminal Division 12 at the Busan District Court announced that Police Sergeant A from a police station in Busan, who was indicted for official secrets leakage and dereliction of duty, was sentenced to six months in prison with a one-year probation.
The court stated, "All the offenses are crimes related to the duties of a police officer, and considering the number and nature of the offenses, the severity is not light."
However, the court explained the sentencing reason by saying, "Considering that this is the first offense."
According to the judgment, in September 2015, Sergeant A, who was working at a police substation in Busan, received a request from his mistress B, who was under investigation for fraud and false accusation cases, to check whether she was wanted.
Thereafter, Sergeant A searched for his mistress's wanted information through the police online inquiry system, took photos of it with his mobile phone, and sent the criminal information to his mistress. The act of providing related criminal information continued seven times until May 2016.
Sergeant A also took a photo of the death confirmation document screen and sent it. This included the causes of death of his mistress's cousin and uncle.
It was confirmed that Sergeant A was aware that his mistress was wanted by the Haeundae Police Station but failed to arrest her on two occasions.
