Damyang-gun Launches Promotion to Investigate Cause of Military Death Incident

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Damyang County, Jeonnam (County Governor Choi Hyungsik) announced on the 28th that it has started promotional support for the Military Death Accident Truth Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Commission), which was launched to investigate the truth behind suspicious death incidents that occurred during military service.

Previously, the Commission, established under a special law in September 2018 under the President's jurisdiction, re-investigates unjust death incidents that occurred in the military to assist in compensating victims and restoring their honor.

The petition submission period is until September 13, and all types of death incidents that occurred in the military, including suspicious deaths with unclear causes, accidental deaths, deaths from illness, and self-inflicted deaths, are subject to petitions.

Since the revision of the Military Personnel Act in 2014, cases of self-inflicted death caused by unit-related factors such as beating or harsh treatment during military service can also be recognized as honorable deaths, so bereaved families who lost loved ones in the military can actively submit petitions and receive assistance.

If you wish to submit a petition, you can download the application form from the Commission's website, fill it out, and submit it by visiting in person, mail, email, or fax.

A county official said, “We plan to strengthen promotional activities using the website, town and township bulletin boards, and village chiefs' meeting materials to ensure that bereaved families do not miss the application period,” and added, “We hope that the Commission’s fair investigation will help heal the long-standing pain of the bereaved families, even if only a little.”
