[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] On the 27th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government signed a 'Memorandum of Understanding for the Successful Bid of the 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Summer Olympics' with the National Unification Advisory Council and the Seoul Sports Council.
The bid for the 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Summer Olympics was initiated in earnest after the leaders of both Koreas agreed on a joint Olympic bid during the inter-Korean summit in the fall of 2018. In January of this year, the joint Olympic bid and promotion plan were approved at the State Council meeting, completing domestic procedures. Currently, the bid is proceeding as one of the cities under continuous consultation for Olympic hosting by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
According to the agreement, the National Unification Advisory Council will utilize domestic and international networks to actively support the 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Summer Olympics bid as a nationwide project by forming and operating the 'National Unification Advisory Council Olympic Bid Support Special Committee.' The Seoul Sports Council will also operate the '2032 Olympic Bid Operation Support Group.'
Seoul and the National Unification Advisory Council will hold a joint conference in June to July. This event commemorates the 20th anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration and will include presentations and discussions on the social and economic expected effects of the joint Seoul-Pyongyang Summer Olympics and future tasks for the Olympic bid. In October, events such as the 'One Heart Festival,' which expresses the wishes of athletes and citizens for the Olympic bid, and an Olympic-themed speech contest for foreign residents in Korea are also being prepared.
The Seoul Sports Council plans to work through experts from various fields, including sports figures, to expand public consensus on the Olympic bid.
Seo Jeong-hyeop, Deputy Mayor of Seoul, stated, "The 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Olympics will be a historic and monumental event for reconciliation and peace between the two Koreas, as well as a leap forward for the cities of Seoul and Pyongyang." He added, "We will steadily carry out practical cooperation and preparations to achieve the joint bid for the inter-Korean Olympics."
