[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on the 27th (local time) that Hong Kong will no longer receive the same treatment under U.S. law as before, reporting this to the U.S. Congress.

In a statement released that day, Secretary Pompeo explained the background of this measure, saying, "A reasonable person could not claim that the current Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China."

The United States has recognized Hong Kong as having a special status separate from mainland China under U.S. law, even after sovereignty over Hong Kong was returned to China.

China is expected to pass the Hong Kong National Security Law at the National People's Congress on the 28th, replacing the Hong Kong legislature.
