Seodaemun-gu Youth Create Youth Policy

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) operates the "6th Seodaemun-gu Youth Participation Committee," which proposes youth policies and provides advice from the perspective of young people.

The participating committee members enhance their understanding of youth policies and related budgets, cultivate the ability to generate policy agendas, and prepare policy alternatives concerning the rights and current issues of youth at the national, Seoul city, and Seodaemun-gu levels.

This year, due to COVID-19, online communication using YouTube, Facebook, and other platforms is planned, and the election for the chairperson will be conducted through podcast campaign presentations and debates among candidates.

There are also plans for exchanges with youth participation committees from other regions through historical and cultural exploration, aiming to raise historical and cultural awareness and leadership through the role of "Youth Tour Guides." However, such exchanges will be operated flexibly depending on the COVID-19 situation.

Additionally, the committee will conduct ▲ 1 to 2 temporary and regular meetings per month ▲ operation of the Seodaemun-gu Youth Participatory Budget System ▲ youth policy surveys and discussions ▲ collection of youth opinions through youth joint festivals ▲ youth policy imagination forums and youth policy conferences.

Middle and high school students residing in Seodaemun-gu or attending schools in the area, as well as out-of-school youth of the corresponding age, can participate. Due to COVID-19, this year, members will be selected through document screening without interviews.

The committee will be organized starting with the appointment ceremony and orientation on June 6, and the term will last until December of this year.

Applicants can download the application form from the Seodaemun-gu website notice board, fill it out, and submit it by email (eduyka@hanmail.net) or visit the Seodaemun-gu Office Child and Youth Division (5th floor of Hong Eun 2-dong Community Center) by the 30th of this month.

Incentives for committee members include certification of volunteer hours, issuance of appointment certificates, activity confirmation letters, and awards such as the Seodaemun-gu Mayor’s Award for outstanding members.

Mayor Moon Seok-jin stated, “I hope that the Seodaemun-gu Youth Participation Committee members will raise their civic awareness of autonomy and participation through active activities.”
