[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Twenty-eight schools in Cheonan and Asan, Chungnam Province, have suspended in-person classes due to concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The Chungnam Office of Education announced on the 27th that 18 schools in Cheonan and 10 schools in Asan have postponed their reopening. Each school plans to delay classes for a period ranging from 1 to 3 days.
In Cheonan, centered around Jiksan-eup in Seobuk-gu, where one confirmed case was reported, seven elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school, and one special school have postponed reopening. Six kindergartens also voluntarily decided to delay in-person attendance.
In Asan, after it was confirmed that a confirmed case from Gumi, Gyeongbuk, visited a Taekwondo academy in the city, two nearby kindergartens and eight elementary schools postponed their start of classes.
The decision to delay reopening due to concerns over COVID-19 spread can be made autonomously by school principals based on their assessment of the situation.
