Warning Label "Fact Check Needed" Attached to Tweets About Mail-in Voting
Twitter Statement Says "Contained Misleading Information"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Twitter, the social media platform frequently used by U.S. President Donald Trump, has for the first time attached a warning message stating "Fact-check needed" to one of Trump's tweets. Twitter explained in a statement that the warning label was applied because the tweet contained potentially misleading information.
According to foreign media such as CNN, on the 26th (local time), Twitter displayed a warning message saying "Check the facts about mail-in voting" with a blue exclamation mark under two tweets by President Trump that claimed mail-in voting could lead to election fraud. Clicking on the warning message brings up a 'fact guide' screen compiling news reports and journalists' tweets stating that "Trump made baseless claims that mail-in voting would lead to voter fraud."
Along with this, Twitter provides a summarized explanation edited by the platform. Through the summary, Twitter stated, "Trump falsely claimed that mail-in voting would lead to 'election fraud,'" and "However, fact-checkers say there is no evidence linking mail-in voting to voter fraud." Twitter introduced a new policy on "misleading information" earlier this month, and this is the first time a warning label has been attached to a tweet by President Trump.
In a separate statement, Twitter explained, "These tweets contain misleading information about voting procedures, so we labeled them to provide additional context regarding mail-in voting."
