One-Way Timed Traffic on School Routes Near Jayang Elementary School in Gwangjin-gu

Conducting Surveys and Traffic Volume Studies for Parents and Local Residents Before Project Implementation

One-Way Timed Traffic on School Routes Near Jayang Elementary School in Gwangjin-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) will implement a "time-based one-way traffic" system on Achasan-ro 42-gil and 44-gil, the school routes around Jayang Elementary School, starting in June to ensure students' safe commute to school during the school hours (8-9 a.m.).

The "time-based one-way traffic" system converts the previously two-way traffic routes around the elementary school into one-way traffic only during students' commuting hours, securing pedestrian space for students and preventing traffic congestion, thereby reducing the risk of traffic accidents on the way to school.

The selected project area, the school routes around Jayang Elementary School (Achasan-ro 42-gil and 44-gil), has narrow pedestrian spaces and frequent vehicle traffic, posing a high risk of traffic accidents, necessitating safety measures to prevent conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians.

Since selecting the project site last year, the district conducted a survey on the "time-based one-way traffic" system to gather opinions from Jayang Elementary School parents and nearby residents, and also investigated the traffic volume on the school routes during commuting hours.

Additionally, after review by the Gwangjin Police Station's traffic safety facility committee, the Seoul Metropolitan Government completed the detailed design for traffic safety facilities in April this year.

The district plans to install traffic signs and road markings indicating the time-based one-way traffic on the school routes near Jayang Elementary School in June and then implement the system.

Meanwhile, to create a safe school commuting environment and prevent children's traffic accidents, the district is also enforcing a "time-based vehicle traffic restriction" that prohibits vehicle traffic during students' commuting hours on school routes of six elementary schools in the area, including Sinja Elementary School, Yangjin Elementary School, and Seongja Elementary School.

Mayor Kim Seon-gap said, "We expect that implementing the time-based one-way traffic system on school routes will help create a safer Gwangjin where children can commute safely," adding, "We will continue to do our best to establish a pedestrian environment where children can commute with peace of mind."
