[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Costa Rica, a Catholic country in Latin America, will legalize same-sex marriage starting on the 26th (local time). It is the sixth Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage.
According to the AP News, same-sex marriage is legal in Costa Rica from this day forward. Previously, in 2018, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights under the Organization of American States (OAS) issued an opinion that same-sex marriage should be legalized, making it a key issue in the presidential election.
Carlos Alvarado, who supported legalization, won the presidential election in April, defeating the opposing candidate, and in August, the Supreme Court ruled that banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.
Local broadcasts and social media will launch an "I do" campaign where same-sex couples agree to marriage vows.
Meanwhile, in Latin America, starting with Argentina's legalization of same-sex marriage in 2010, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, and Ecuador have also joined. In Mexico, it is only legal in some regions.
