Coupang Closes Bucheon Logistics Center... Comprehensive Quarantine Measures Including Full Employee Testing (Summary)

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Coupang announced on the 25th that it has independently closed the Bucheon Logistics Center, where a confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported, and has implemented the strongest quarantine measures recommended by health authorities and experts to ensure customer safety. Coupang plans to conduct additional disinfection at the Bucheon Logistics Center and carry out a thorough investigation of all employees at the center. Coupang will bear all additional costs incurred. A Coupang representative stated, "Products ordered by customers are disinfected once more at the final stage before delivery, ensuring safety. We will take every possible measure until safety is confirmed so that not a single customer feels anxious."

According to Coupang, the Bucheon Logistics Center, where the COVID-19 case was confirmed, opened on March 2. Since then, professional disinfection has been conducted more than 170 times, twice daily for 85 days. Coupang will suspend operations at the Bucheon Logistics Center until safety is fully secured. During this period, deliveries will be made through other logistics centers instead of the Bucheon center.

Since the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, Coupang has established a system to systematically prevent virus spread throughout the entire process from order to delivery. This management method reduces the risk of COVID-19 infection at each stage, including receiving, sorting, and packaging products, as well as the process from the logistics center to the delivery camp and finally to each household.

Additionally, thermal scanners have been installed at all logistics centers nationwide to screen employees showing symptoms of infection, and all employees have been required to wear masks and gloves while working inside the logistics centers. To ensure customers receive their orders safely, daily disinfection is conducted at logistics centers, and sufficient supplies of masks and hand sanitizers are provided for all employees.

In particular, Coupang explained that fresh food products arrive at the logistics center already packaged, so employees do not directly handle the products. Coupang also manages delivery personnel to wear masks and gloves during the final delivery stage to ensure safe delivery. A Coupang representative emphasized, "We are prepared and determined to take not only the necessary measures for customer safety but also all additional measures. Products ordered by customers have been and will continue to be safe from the threat of COVID-19."
