In the Gumi area, there are 181 institutions including 101 kindergartens, 52 elementary schools, and 28 middle schools. The target school in the Sangju area is Hwaryeong Elementary School. This measure was taken in consideration of parents' concerns regarding the recent local spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Gumi and Sangju.
Previously, three schools in the Sangju area?Hwadong Elementary, Hwadong Middle, and Hwaryeong Middle?which started in-person classes on the 20th, have switched from in-person to remote classes.
Originally, the Provincial Office of Education had instructed each school on the 27th to conduct in-person classes for kindergarten, elementary school grades 1 and 2, and middle school grade 3.
An official from the Office of Education stated, "Concerns about community infection among students and parents in the affected areas are high, and demands for adjusting in-person classes are increasing, so we have decided to adjust the in-person classes."
