[Asia Economy Reporter Yang Nak-gyu]An Army sergeant scheduled to be discharged next month was confirmed positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) after going on leave to Daegu. Considering that the sergeant is receiving treatment at a civilian hospital, the military plans to process his discharge without returning him to the unit.
According to the Ministry of National Defense on the 26th, Sergeant A, belonging to an Army unit in Gyeongnam, went on leave to Daegu in mid-month and contracted COVID-19 after overlapping movement paths with a civilian confirmed case.
Sergeant A was confirmed positive the afternoon before his scheduled return from leave. He will be granted official leave for treatment from that day until the 1st of next month, and will use pre-discharge leave from the 2nd to the 11th of next month. He will be discharged directly on the 11th without returning to the unit.
With Sergeant A’s COVID-19 confirmation, the cumulative number of confirmed cases within the military reached 52 (39 recovered) as of 10 a.m. that day. According to health authorities, 15 are in isolation, and according to the military’s own preventive isolation standards, 939 are in quarantine.
Meanwhile, the military is conducting COVID-19 diagnostic tests for all new recruits this week as well as last week. This week, 6,116 recruits are scheduled to enlist. Of those, 2,280 who enlisted the previous day have been tested, and 2,464 are scheduled to be tested today.
