Guro-gu Strengthens Dorimcheon Flood Prevention Measures in Preparation for the Rainy Season

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) is strengthening flood prevention measures for Dorimcheon Stream in preparation for the rainy season.

On the 26th, Guro-gu announced that it is focusing on safety measures such as installing entry and exit barriers and operating a river patrol team to prevent isolation accidents along the riverbanks caused by heavy rain.

Dorimcheon is a local stream with a total length of 11 km, originating from Gwanaksan Mountain and flowing into Sindorim-dong in Guro-gu. It is a natural urban space well equipped with walking trails, exercise facilities, and bicycle paths, attracting many residents. However, during heavy rain, the water level of the stream rises rapidly, sometimes causing accidents where users become isolated.

Accordingly, Guro-gu will additionally install entry and exit barriers in sections within the Dorimcheon area this year. The installation sites include nine entry and exit points between Dorimcheon Station and Sindorim Station.

The entry and exit barriers can be operated remotely by the district office’s control system, enabling rapid response even during sudden heavy rain. Additionally, to prevent residents from entering under bridges to avoid rain, warning voice messages are automatically broadcast when residents approach.

Last year, Guro-gu installed nine entry and exit barriers between Sindorim Station and Guro Digital Complex Station.

Guro-gu also formed and operates a joint public-private ‘River Patrol Team.’ The team, composed of local autonomous disaster prevention groups and employees from the district office and community centers, regularly inspects flood control facilities and vulnerable areas along Dorimcheon. In emergencies, they control residents’ access and guide them to evacuate quickly. A total of 16 teams will work in four shifts on a rotating basis.

Measures are also in place for vulnerable groups who have difficulty responding quickly during floods. Emergency support volunteers will be designated to assist vulnerable households such as elderly living alone, disabled persons, patients with severe illnesses, and elderly with dementia. These volunteers will be nearby residents assigned to visit the target households within a short time.

A Guro-gu official stated, “We are making every effort to establish a preemptive system to prevent flood damage this summer,” and added, “We will do our best to safely protect residents from various disaster situations.”
