[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The lawyer representing Jeon Mo (38, office worker), who acted as the 'watchman' gateway for the Telegram 'Nth Room,' argued that "there was no profit gained from the crime."
Jeon is accused of creating the Telegram group chat 'Gotham Room' from April to September last year and posting links to four other chat rooms sharing obscene materials, displaying over 10,000 obscene items.
At the continuation trial held on the 25th under Judge Park Min of the Suwon District Court Criminal Division 9, Jeon's lawyer claimed, "The defendant did not gain any benefits from this crime, and we can submit not only his personal accounts but also his family members' accounts."
The prosecution requested a sentence of 3 years and 6 months imprisonment for Jeon in March. After criticism arose that the punishment was too lenient, they applied to resume arguments. At the first trial after the resumption on the 6th of last month, the prosecution requested the court to order the submission of financial and communication data to investigate Jeon's connection with the Doctor's Room and to determine whether there were any criminal proceeds.
The court accepted the prosecution's request, and banks and Bitcoin operators submitted related data to the court, but reportedly, nothing noteworthy was found. The prosecution stated, "The defendant operated a blog and gained some benefits, which we will prove through the defendant's examination." This means they intend to proceed with the defendant's examination before amending the indictment, to which Jeon's lawyer expressed opposition.
The prosecution and Jeon's defense counsel will review the financial and communication data submitted to the court and present their opinions at the next hearing. The next trial is scheduled for the 22nd of next month.
