Request for Preliminary Feasibility Study on 'Steel Industry Technology Development' and Designation of 'Gumi 5 Industrial Complex as Rental-Only Complex'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongsangbuk-do announced on the 25th that Governor Lee Cheol-woo visited the Blue House on the 22nd, meeting with Chief Secretary Noh Young-min and others to request support for regional issues and budget, including the HEMP (hemp-based) bio-industry regulatory free zone, steel industry preliminary feasibility study, and designation of Gumi National 5 Industrial Complex as a rental-only industrial complex.
On that day, Governor Lee praised Chief Secretary Noh Young-min for the president's immediate approval of the request to transfer severe patients from Cheongdo Daenam Hospital to a higher-level hospital, calling it support beyond ordinary sincerity, and then requested regulatory relaxation on hemp, saying, "I have brought up the issues again to revive the local economy after COVID-19, so please take a good look."
'Hemp' is a plant of the mulberry family, commonly referred to as daema (hemp) in Korea. Unlike marijuana, hemp, known as industrial hemp, is emerging overseas as an eco-friendly crop used in various fields such as food, textiles, beauty, medical, and construction materials.
Governor Lee emphasized the necessity of the bio-industry regulatory free zone, stating, "Canada has already created separate regulations to industrially utilize 'hemp' safely, and China has even established large-scale special zones to foster it as a strategic industry."
Hemp is known to account for more than 50% of the world's CBD (Cannabidiol) production. CBD, a component extracted from hemp, is widely used as a bio-material for depression treatment, skin moisturizing, and more due to its excellent calming effects.
Along with this, Governor Lee also requested attention to the 'Steel Industry Re-advancement Technology Development Preliminary Feasibility Study Project' centered on Pohang and the 'Designation of Gumi National 5 Industrial Complex as a Rental-only Industrial Complex,' calling them projects that will revitalize the regional economy.
Governor Lee continued his efforts to revive the local economy by proposing the regulatory free zone during the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters video meeting on COVID-19 held on the 24th.
