Food Waste Metered Bins with RFID: 250 Additional Units Installed This Year, Expanded to All Areas... Resident Convenience Greatly Improved with RFID Disposal Method, 24-Hour Disposal Available
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) installed 20 RFID food waste pay-by-weight machines in general residential houses on a trial basis last year and received high approval from residents. As a result, this year, the district will expand the installation of RFID pay-by-weight machines throughout the entire area.
Until now, residents living in general houses had to dispose of food waste using designated pay-by-weight bags. Residents had to store food waste at home until the bags were full, which caused management issues such as odor, and they had to endure the inconvenience of disposing of waste only at designated times.
In response, the district launched the "Smart Food Waste Treatment and Collection System" as a campaign pledge during the 7th local government term and installed 20 RFID food waste pay-by-weight machines on a trial basis at 16 general residential locations in the Dorim-dong area last year.
As a result of the trial operation, residents quickly adapted to using the RFID pay-by-weight machines in residential areas and responded that disposing of waste became much more convenient than before. Therefore, the district decided to promote the expansion of RFID pay-by-weight machines throughout Yeongdeungpo.
From now on, residents are expected to be free from restrictions related to disposal times. They will be able to dispose of food waste anytime, 24 hours a day, at the nearest RFID pay-by-weight machine from their homes.
Additionally, the existing collection containers dedicated to food waste pay-by-weight bags have caused numerous complaints due to contamination and odor from leakage caused by bag damage, and they have also had negative effects on the urban landscape.
With the expansion of RFID pay-by-weight machines, these inconveniences are expected to be resolved, and the urban landscape will improve. Moreover, since the system calculates fees accurately based on the amount of waste disposed, it is expected to have a significant effect on reducing food waste.
This year, the district will continue to expand RFID pay-by-weight machines mainly in key disposal areas of general residential houses. By installing 110 RFID pay-by-weight machines in the first half and 140 in the second half of the year, a total of 250 RFID pay-by-weight machines will be equipped to further enhance residents' convenience.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, "Waste management is one of the most important issues that determine the quality of life for residents," and added, "We will focus on improving convenience that residents can feel in their daily lives and create a clean and livable Yeongdeungpo."
