NYT Front Page Filled with Names of 1,000 COVID-19 Deaths: "They Are Us"

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] The New York Times (NYT) in the United States filled the front page of its Sunday edition on the 24th with the names and obituaries of 1,000 victims of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In the article titled "U.S. Deaths Near 100,000, Tremendous Loss" on the front page, which was released on Twitter before the physical paper was delivered, the New York Times paid tribute, saying, "These are not just names on a list. They were us."

This unusual editorial approach is interpreted as an effort to highlight the severity of the COVID-19 damage from a new perspective.

To do this, the New York Times reportedly searched the internet thoroughly to select 1,000 individuals, representing 10% of U.S. deaths, and also summarized the distinctive aspects of their lives.

According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. has about 1.6 million COVID-19 cases, the highest in the world. Deaths have also reached approximately 97,000.
