[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Spain, which had locked its borders due to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), will open its borders to foreign tourists starting in July.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held a press conference on the 23rd (local time) and announced that Spain will allow foreign tourists to enter the country from July.

Spain's tourism industry suffered a severe blow as the borders were closed due to the COVID-19 situation. Spain is the second most visited country by foreign tourists in the world after France. Tourism accounts for 12% of Spain's industry.

Additionally, the Spanish government decided to permit major sports events, including the professional football Primera Liga, starting from the 8th of next month.

Meanwhile, according to the international statistics site Worldometer, Spain's cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases total 281,904, with 28,628 deaths.
