[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Due to the widening gap between the United States and China after the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), an analysis has emerged that many Asian countries will face a crossroads of choosing between the two.
On the 22nd (local time), Nouriel Roubini, a professor at New York University, USA, said in an interview with the British BBC, "Many Asian countries will be forced to line up with either the United States or China," forecasting the world after COVID-19.
He added, "The gap between the United States and China will widen further after COVID-19," "and countries will have to decide which technology to use between the US and China in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) systems, 5G, and robotics."
Professor Roubini, known as the scholar who predicted the 2008 financial crisis, is nicknamed 'Dr. Doom' for his pessimistic economic outlook.
Professor Roubini pointed out, "Stores can reopen, but the question is whether business will return to how it was before," "shopping centers that reopened in China are still empty, and half of the airplanes are not operating."
However, he predicted, "Asian developing countries will recover better than other advanced countries."
He also explained, "We will experience an unprecedented economic recession due to COVID-19," adding, "During the financial crisis, it took three years for the economy to decline, but this time, in not even three months, but three weeks, all sectors have plummeted vertically."
Professor Roubini, nicknamed 'Dr. Doom' for his pessimistic economic forecasts, also predicted the global financial crisis in 2008 ahead of others.
