[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Park Hee-eun] Mexico's professional soccer league Liga MX (first division) has ended the season without a champion due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Multiple foreign media outlets, including the Associated Press, reported that Liga MX held an extraordinary general meeting on the 22nd (local time) and decided not to resume the 2019-2020 season's Clausura league, ending the season as is.
Accordingly, with each team having seven Clausura matches remaining, the season will end without determining a champion. This is the first time Liga MX has canceled a season.
Previously, Liga MX had only completed 10 rounds out of the 17 rounds of the Clausura league this season before suspending matches on March 15 due to the spread of COVID-19.
Afterwards, with an emergency situation continuing, including 12 confirmed COVID-19 cases within the Santos Laguna club alone, Liga MX found it difficult to resume matches.
Liga MX hopes to start the new season in July after consulting with health authorities.
However, even if the new season opens, it will initially be held without spectators.
