[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] A car that has attracted attention even before its release and requires waiting several months to receive even if you sign a contract on the first day of launch. This is the story of Genesis, currently the hottest brand in Korea. Most of Genesis's current lineup faithfully adheres to the basics of premium vehicles, emphasizing spacious interiors and comfortable driving experiences, but the trajectory of the 'youngest' G70 is somewhat different. We test-drove the Genesis G70, which boasts sportiness as its main weapon and positions itself as a rare luxury sports sedan among domestic brands.
The model tested was the 2020 G70 3.3T, released after a mid-cycle refresh at the end of last year.
As it is a mid-cycle refresh, the design has not changed significantly. The exterior features the design prior to the application of Genesis's new family look, which began with the GV80. Some real carbon materials have been added in various interior and exterior parts.
As it is positioned as a sports sedan, the body size is compact. The length, width, and height are 4685 mm, 1850 mm, and 1400 mm respectively, similar in class to Hyundai's compact sedan Avante (length, width, height: 4650, 1825, 1420 mm). The height is actually 20 mm lower, completing an appearance befitting a sports sedan. Overall, the rear legroom space is somewhat lacking for use as a family car, but conversely, the size is manageable even for female drivers without burden.
Inside the vehicle, the presence of the 12.3-inch 3D cluster is significant. The driver can choose between 2D and 3D displays to receive various driving information in the format that suits them. Originally, this 3D cluster was first applied in the world on the 3.3 turbo model, and after this mid-cycle refresh, it became an optional feature available on the 2.0 turbo model as well.
The true value of the G70 shines even more after starting to drive. The quietness at low speeds is considerable, especially as it absorbs shocks from uneven road surfaces very smoothly. When driving in urban areas, it gives a strong impression of a heavy yet comfortable luxury sedan.
The most anticipated high-speed driving section. When pressing the accelerator pedal, the speed quickly exceeded 100 km/h. Using the sport mode makes the powerful acceleration feel even stronger. Rather than a smooth increase in speed, the driving sensation is better described as literally 'bursting forward.' At high speeds, the body sits low, increasing stability. It is impressive that the body does not sway and quietness is maintained even at speeds above 100 km/h. Thanks to excellent acceleration performance, lane changes are also easy. The test model equipped with the 3.3 T-GDI engine delivers a maximum output of 370 horsepower and a maximum torque of 52.0 kg·m.
The Genesis G70 is scheduled for a facelift within the year. Given the unprecedented praise received by the GV80 and the new G80, which were introduced earlier, expectations for the newly updated G70 are also high. The application of Genesis's new family look design, as well as enhancements to the powertrain and advanced features, are anticipated. Attention is focused on whether the G70, which has already been recognized for its quality in the fiercely competitive luxury car market in the United States, can demonstrate an even stronger presence as a luxury sports sedan through the new model.
