69-Year-Old Woman Living in Seongju-gun, Gyeongbuk, Infected by Grandson After Visiting Daughter's House in Daegu
The streets of Itaewon, Seoul, which have become quiet due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] The grandmother of a university student working part-time at a restaurant, who was confirmed as the first COVID-19 case in the Daegu area linked to the Itaewon club, has also been confirmed infected.
As health authorities conduct a large-scale epidemiological investigation into the contacts around the third-generation infected part-time worker, the first reported case of fourth-generation infection has raised tension among citizens in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions.
According to Gyeongbuk Province and Daegu City on the 23rd, a 69-year-old woman, Ms. A, living in Seongju-gun, Gyeongbuk, tested positive for COVID-19 that morning. She is the maternal grandmother of the university student in Daegu who was confirmed positive the day before. It was confirmed that Ms. A had visited her daughter’s home (the university student’s mother) in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, a few days ago.
Health authorities identified that the first confirmed case in Daegu linked to the Itaewon club had been working part-time at a large restaurant. They began testing all 41 people identified as direct contacts, including 10 restaurant employees, and placed them under self-quarantine. Contact tracing is also underway through reviewing the restaurant’s card transaction records and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
Meanwhile, the first confirmed university student case in Daegu, Mr. B (19), is presumed to have been infected by his friend Mr. C from Seoul, who visited Daegu between the 11th and 20th. Mr. C was infected by another Seoul friend, Mr. D, who tested positive after visiting the Itaewon club before his trip to Daegu. Health authorities analyze this as a third-generation infection linked to the Itaewon club.
