[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The UK has decided to enforce mandatory self-quarantine measures for incoming travelers to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Brandon Lewis, the UK Minister responsible for Northern Ireland, stated on the 22nd (local time) during an appearance on Sky News, "Those entering the UK will be quarantined for 14 days."
According to BBC, starting as early as next month, those entering the UK via airplanes, ships, trains, etc., will be required to provide their contact information along with the location of their self-quarantine. If they do not have a residence or a pre-arranged place, the government will arrange one for them.
Health officials will conduct on-site inspections to ensure that incoming travelers comply with the self-quarantine requirements. If violations are detected, fines of up to ?1,000 (approximately 1.5 million KRW) may be imposed.
The measure targets British nationals returning from overseas. Large truck transport workers, medical personnel, and those entering from Ireland are exempt from this requirement.
The government plans to review whether to extend the measure every three weeks after its implementation.
Home Secretary Priti Patel is expected to announce detailed information at the regular COVID-19 response press conference scheduled for the afternoon.
