[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The cumulative number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in Singapore has surpassed 30,000.

On the 22nd, according to local media such as The Straits Times, the Singapore Ministry of Health announced that 614 additional people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases to 30,426.

The majority of the new confirmed cases are migrant workers residing in dormitories. There were 4 confirmed cases among Singapore citizens and permanent residents.

In Singapore, it took about 13 weeks from the first case on January 23 to surpass 10,000 cumulative cases on the 22nd of last month. However, it then took only 14 days to exceed 20,000 cases on the 6th of this month, and another 16 days to surpass 30,000 cumulative cases. This means that within one month from the 10,000 cumulative cases on the 22nd of last month, the number increased by 20,000.

The high ratio of COVID-19 patients relative to the population is due to hundreds to over a thousand confirmed cases daily among the 323,000 migrant workers living in cramped dormitories since early last month.

The Singapore authorities plan to conduct COVID-19 testing for all migrant workers residing in dormitories. As a result, hundreds of confirmed cases are expected to continue emerging.
