[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gom Inhyeong] A claim has been raised that Jeonbuk, which has entered a super-aged society, should create an age-friendly city.
The Jeonbuk Research Institute proposed the necessity and tasks of creating an age-friendly city in Jeonbuk, which has entered a super-aged society, through the issue briefing "The Necessity and Tasks of Creating an Age-Friendly City" released on the 21st.
The elderly population ratio in Jeonbuk was 20.40% in 2019, the third highest among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide.
Jeonbuk has already entered a super-aged society.
The Jeonbuk Research Institute expects that by 2040, the elderly population in Jeonbuk will increase to about 706,000.
Along with the increase in the elderly population, the old-age dependency ratio is also expected to increase significantly, predicted to rise sharply from 55.3% in 2019 to 101.1% in 2035.
Therefore, it is argued that Jeonbuk requires the creation of an age-friendly city for a secure, vibrant, and comfortable old age.
An age-friendly city is evaluated as a policy tool that promotes active aging by comprehensively approaching aging within the urban environment structure and community life.
In South Korea, 20 cities including Seoul and Busan have already joined the WHO Age-Friendly Cities International Network and are actively promoting policies and projects related to age-friendly cities.
The institute sees the need to promote joining the WHO Age-Friendly Cities International Network for international cooperation through the creation of an age-friendly city, and to establish a retirement education training center linked with the National Pension Service and Sunchang Longevity Research Institute that can provide retirement planning and re-employment entrepreneurship education for retirees.
Dr. Lee Dong-gi, who is in charge of the research, said, "Creating an age-friendly city is no longer a choice but an essential policy task. We must promote the creation of an age-friendly city tailored to the characteristics of Jeonbuk so that the elderly can spend a vibrant and comfortable old age in Jeonbuk."
