The person in the spotlight is Fire Sergeant Kim Jong-ho (33), belonging to the Special Response Team of the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters.
Kim, who was appointed as a fire officer in 2010, has regularly donated blood and expressed his intention to donate hematopoietic stem cells if a patient with matching genetic tissue appears.
Last month, he received a call from the hematopoietic stem cell bank asking if he could donate hematopoietic stem cells, and Kim expressed his willingness to donate without any hesitation.
In the case of hematopoietic stem cells from others, the chance of genetic matching with the patient is only 1 in 20,000.
Kim said, "As a rescue and paramedic worker, I have always done my best to save precious lives. I believe donating hematopoietic stem cells is something that must be done as a firefighter to save lives. I hope the recipient lives healthily and happily."
