"Our Neighborhood's Everyday Artists All Gathered Here"... Recruiting Jongno Lifestyle Culture Clubs

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) is recruiting new clubs to join 'Saenghwal Munhwa Dongari Jongnorang,' a living culture club that encourages voluntary participation from ordinary citizens who are not professional artists, to revitalize living culture.

It will be an excellent opportunity to interact with other active clubs in the area, create festivals through enjoyable gatherings, and participate in various educational programs aimed at strengthening networks and enhancing capabilities.

The target is living culture clubs composed of three or more adults active in Jongno-gu, including genre universities and reading clubs, with no genre restrictions, welcoming all clubs that wish to enjoy living culture. However, members must reside in Jongno-gu, or the club's main activities and practice spaces must be located within the district.

To apply, download and complete the club information collection form from the district office website (http://www.jongno.go.kr) or the Jongno Cultural Foundation website (https://www.jfac.or.kr), then submit it online to the person in charge at jongno_group@naver.com.

Benefits of joining Jongnorang include ▲ opportunities for club networking and capacity-building education ▲ activities and presentations in local idle spaces ▲ participation in the Jongnorang Festival ▲ promotional opportunities and a platform for recruiting members.

For more details, please refer to the district office website or contact the Culture Division (☎2148-1806) or Jongno Cultural Foundation (☎6203-1167, 6263-1184) for guidance.

Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “We will strive to create an environment where local residents can participate as subjects, not just beneficiaries, of cultural and artistic enjoyment through living culture art clubs like ‘Jongnorang’ and foster self-sustainability.” He added, “We will establish a solid public-private cooperation system and support activities so that all Jongno residents can equally enjoy a life enriched with culture.”

In October last year, Jongno-gu held the ‘2019 Jongnorang Festival,’ a living culture art club union festival, at Marronnier Park in Daehangno. Over 20 clubs participated, showcasing performances in various genres such as Korean dance, gugak (traditional Korean music), Nanta, modern dance, and ukulele.

Additionally, handicraft and knitting works were exhibited, and experiential programs like patchwork and personalized perfume making were operated, receiving positive responses from passing citizens.

In December of the same year, a mini-concert titled ‘Jongnorang Deepening Night’ was held, providing a place for residents to empathize and communicate through music. The event featured soothing daegeum (bamboo flute) performances, orchestra stages, as well as stylish jazz band and tango performances, showcasing hidden talents and everyday artists of Jongno rarely seen before.
