[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The ‘Gangil, Seoul Compact City’ project, which involves building living SOC and public housing at the Gangil Bus Public Garage in Gangdong-gu, will select design competition entries through a non-face-to-face method.
Seoul City announced on the 19th that it selected five finalists for the Gangil, Seoul Compact City international design competition through a video conference judging method, considering the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
To adopt creative and innovative designs, the international jury was composed of a majority of four internationally renowned foreign architects and landscape experts. The remote video conference judging held on the 8th took place at the SETEC exhibition hall in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, where four video cameras were installed to broadcast the judging room situation live to the overseas jurors. The overseas jurors accessed the cloud-based video conference system and conducted the judging while watching the camera footage from the judging room and the overseas jury panel’s video. The finalists include three domestic firms and two overseas firms: ▲ The A Group Engineering Comprehensive Architecture Office ▲ Samwoo Comprehensive Architecture Office ▲ Sangji Engineering Architecture Office ▲ Studio Sunggi Park ▲ Studio Milou Singapore Pte.
The final judging is scheduled for July 16 at SETEC in Seoul, where winners and runners-up will be selected through a work review. The winner who passes the final judging will be granted the priority negotiation right for the design contract, and the runners-up will receive a certain design compensation.
Kim Se-yong, president of SH Corporation, stated, "Conducting untact meetings is not a choice but a necessity to prepare for the post-COVID-19 era," adding, "We will actively promote the introduction of video conference judging methods in future international design competitions."
