[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap), together with the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center, is promoting the ‘Dementia Safety Village Eoseo Opsyo Project’ to alleviate the economic burden on dementia patients and their families and to revitalize the stagnant local commercial district.

Gwangjin-gu Launches 'Dementia Safe Village Eoseo Opso Project' Dementia Patient & Family Card

In order to establish a social safety net for the comfortable and safe living of dementia patients and elderly residents in the area, the district selected the Junggok-dong area as a ‘Dementia Safety Village’ in 2016 and is conducting a dementia community resource enhancement project in cooperation with local medical institutions, welfare and nursing facilities, beauty salons, and shops.

This ‘Dementia Village Eoseo Opsyo Project’ offers a minimum of 5% to a maximum of 20% discount or other services such as beverage provision when dementia patients and their families who possess the ‘Dementia Patient & Family Card’ use stores designated as dementia safety businesses.

The ‘Dementia Patient & Family Card’ can be issued through the Gwangjin-gu Dementia Safety Center, with one card for the dementia patient and one for the caregiver, up to a total of two cards per dementia patient, and can be used for three years from the date of issuance.

Currently, five businesses located in Junggok-dong, including restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and optician shops, have voluntarily participated as dementia safety businesses and provide discount benefits.

Additionally, the district plans to gradually expand dementia safety businesses targeting participating institutions in the Dementia Safety Village and senior discount businesses in Gwangjin-gu.

Mayor Kim Seon-gap said, “This ‘Dementia Safety Village Eoseo Opsyo Project’ is expected to have a twofold effect by helping dementia patients and their families while also revitalizing the local commercial district, which has been stagnant due to COVID-19.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to eliminate negative perceptions and social prejudices about dementia and to create a local community where both patients and families can live with peace of mind.”
