Cultural Heritage Administration Hosts Workshop to Promote DMZ World Heritage Listing

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 18th that it will hold a workshop to promote the registration of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) as a World Heritage site. This event was organized to share relevant information ahead of the full-scale project launch, following the 'Inter-Korean Joint Registration Promotion Agreement for the DMZ World Heritage' signed by the Cultural Heritage Administration, Gyeonggi Province, and Gangwon Province in July last year. Over two days, on the 19th and 20th, officials from border areas (cities and counties adjacent to the DMZ or the Northern Limit Line at sea) will gather at the Hantan River Spa Hotel in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, to share progress and future plans, and discuss necessary aspects for the registration preparation process.

The Cultural Heritage Administration will explain the progress of the registration promotion and the future direction of the DMZ field survey, including key discussions from six inter-Korean cultural heritage policy forums held last year. The Gyeonggi Cultural Foundation will share the outcomes of last year's project to establish a foundation for World Heritage registration. Officials from border areas will introduce the status of their collections related to the DMZ area, the current situation of Minbuk villages, documentation efforts, and the progress and plans of related projects. Minbuk villages refer to villages located north of the Civilian Control Line.
