Army Original Musical 'Gwihwan' Reprises in June... Reflecting on the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Army's original musical "Return (Subtitle: The Promise of That Day)" has confirmed its revival in June to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. "Return" premiered last year, focusing on the excavation of the remains of soldiers who died in the Korean War.

The musical "Return," created to convey the significance of the noble footsteps of those who sacrificed their one and only lives for the country, attracted 50,000 viewers across seven regions including Seoul, Gwangju, Seongnam, and Daejeon during its initial run.

The Army Headquarters and the production company Insight Entertainment Co., Ltd. decided to revive the performance to express gratitude for the dedication and sacrifice of 3.17 million veterans on the meaningful occasion of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, and to tell the story of finding the remains of patriotic soldiers who gave their one and only lives for the country but have yet to be recovered, still left alone in unknown mountains, and bringing them back to their homeland.

"Return" begins with Seungho, a Korean War veteran, wandering the mountains in search of the remains of his fallen comrades. The story unfolds by interweaving Seungho's present, who has devoted his life to keeping the promise made on that day to come back and find them, with his past, which was caught in the midst of the Korean War turmoil.

Lee Jeong-yeol and Lee Geon-myeong play the present-day Seungho, who climbs the mountains daily searching for his past comrades. Yoon Ji-sung and Do Kyung-soo (D.O.) are cast as the past Seungho, who constantly struggled in the heart of the war. Lee Jae-kyun and Lee Chan-dong appear as Haeil, who was revered for his profound literary knowledge beyond that of his peers, while Yang Ji-won, Lee Ji-hye, and Kim Se-jeong play Haeil’s twin sister Haeseong, who enlists under another’s name. Kim Ki-soo takes on the role of Jingu, who always makes his friends laugh with his pure heart. Lee Hong-gi and Kim Min-seok (Xiumin) play Hyunmin, Seungho’s bright and confident grandson, and Kim Min-seok and Lee Seong-yeol are cast as Wooju, Hyunmin’s cheerful friend. Additionally, over 20 military actor ensemble members selected through auditions participate in the production.

Directed by Kim Dong-yeon, written by Lee Hee-jun, composed by Park Jeong-ah, and choreographed by Shin Seon-ho, the original production team has reunited to prepare the revival of "Return," which will be performed from June 4 to July 12 at the Olympic Park Woori Financial Art Hall.

The production company stated that to prevent and control COVID-19, they will operate socially distanced seating with one seat apart, conduct thorough venue disinfection, and manage safe audience flow, strictly adhering to the government’s "distancing in daily life" guidelines, prioritizing audience safety above all.
