Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology Ranked 5th in Korea and 160th Worldwide by 'Nature'

Seoul National University, KAIST, Yonsei University, and Sungkyunkwan University Also Selected

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Sharon] Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) announced on the 13th that UNIST ranked 5th domestically and 160th globally in the 'Nature Index 2020 Academic Institution Rankings.'

According to UNIST, this result marks a rise of one rank domestically and 34 ranks globally compared to last year. Looking at the rankings by field, UNIST ranked 57th worldwide in the natural sciences, climbing 18 places from 75th last year, and in the chemistry field, it jumped from outside the top 100 last year to 94th this year.

Additionally, in the 'Rising Educational Institutions' ranking, which evaluates performance from 2015 to 2019, UNIST was ranked 88th globally, recognizing its steady growth.

The Nature Index is published annually by the scientific journal Nature and is calculated by comprehensively evaluating the contributions of researchers and co-authors of papers published in 82 internationally prestigious journals. Since it does not include other factors such as reputation, it is known as an indicator that measures only the research capability of the institution.

The 2020 evaluation announced rankings up to 500 based on journals published during 2019, with the top five domestic universities being Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Yonsei University, Sungkyunkwan University, and UNIST, respectively.

In the global rankings, Harvard University in the United States took first place, followed by Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Science and Technology of China, and the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
