Gangdong-gu, Seoul's First to Introduce 'Non-face-to-face Dementia Treatment System'

Implementation of Remote Precision Dementia Screening for COVID-19 Response... Integration of Home Nursing and Non-Face-to-Face Medical Care... Expected to Minimize Dementia Care Gaps Due to Prolonged Closure of Dementia Safety Centers

Gangdong-gu, Seoul's First to Introduce 'Non-face-to-face Dementia Treatment System'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is launching the first 'Remote Dementia Precision Examination' in Seoul's autonomous districts, combining non-face-to-face medical consultations and home nursing services.

This non-face-to-face examination system was established to resolve the backlog of precision examinations caused by the closure of the Dementia Safety Center and to respond to urgent situations such as emergency examinations for high-risk elderly individuals.

As of the end of April this year, 130 residents received precision examinations in Gangdong-gu, a 226% decrease compared to 424 last year. The implementation of this service is expected to help alleviate the inconvenience of elderly residents waiting for precision examinations.

The remote precision examination will be conducted every Tuesday and Wednesday for those on the waiting list who wish to participate. Necessary items for remote medical consultations, such as laptops and software, will be provided by the Gangdong-gu Dementia Safety Center.

After scheduling the non-face-to-face consultation through a preliminary phone interview, a nurse visits the home to conduct the first diagnostic test and an in-depth consultation with the caregiver.

Based on this, during the second visit, a remote consultation between the doctor and the patient takes place, and the second diagnostic test (clinical evaluation) is performed.

Considering that the examinees are elderly individuals unfamiliar with digital devices, staff assist with preparation for the consultation, such as operating laptops, speakers, and application access, while guiding the process, allowing patients to comfortably receive diagnostic tests at home.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “The need for non-face-to-face services is increasing due to the impact of COVID-19. This remote precision examination is a pioneering future-oriented examination model introduced to fill the gap in dementia care. We will actively support high-risk elderly dementia patients to overcome this period healthily.”
