[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is promoting a Hope Job Project for vulnerable groups facing economic difficulties due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Since March, the employment shock has become visible due to a decrease in employees caused by a sharp drop in sales of domestic companies and a surge in the number of people on leave at an all-time high. Accordingly, the district has expanded public job projects to establish an employment safety net for vulnerable groups until the COVID-19 crisis ends.
This COVID-19 Overcoming Hope Job Project is a matching project funded by the national, city, and district governments, totaling approximately 7.9 billion KRW, with a cost-sharing ratio of 90% national funds, 5% city funds, and 5% district funds.
The district plans to hire a total of 952 people for Hope Jobs, working from 15 to 30 hours per week. They will work 6 hours per day, and in some projects, exceptionally up to 8 hours. The number of workers working more than 30 hours is limited to within 30%.
The main work areas include △support for daily quarantine △support for recovery of local markets and small business owners △support for agricultural and fishing village economic activities △improvement of public rest areas △improvement of cultural and artistic environments △emergency public work support △environmental maintenance in industrial clusters △disaster prevention △other specialized projects.
Through this Hope Job Project, the district expects to strengthen the COVID-19 related quarantine system, recover the local economy, and in the long term, connect to private sector jobs to create sustainable public sector jobs in the community.
The hiring targets are residents in need of livelihood support due to COVID-19, including vulnerable groups. Priority will be given to low-income groups, unemployed persons, those on leave or business closure, unpaid leave workers, and youth.
The wage is set at 8,590 KRW per hour based on the minimum wage, so workers will receive a monthly salary ranging from a minimum of 670,000 KRW to a maximum of 1,800,000 KRW.
Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “We have launched this Hope Job Project to overcome COVID-19 together,” and added, “I hope it can be of some help to vulnerable groups facing economic difficulties.”
