Hurim Robot Signs MOU with Hanyang University ERICA to Establish Intelligent Robot Education System

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hurim Robot announced on the 11th that it has signed an industry-academic cooperation agreement with Hanyang University ERICA to establish an intelligent robot education system.

Hurim Robot plans to build an ‘Industry-Coupled Problem-Based Learning system (IC-PBL)’ using the intelligent service robot Temi in collaboration with Hanyang University ERICA.

The IC-PBL course opened through this agreement is titled ‘ICT Convergence Robotics Engineering,’ and is co-taught by Professor Byungjoo Lee from the Department of Electronic Engineering and Professor Sanggil Jeon from the Department of Business Administration. They share responsibilities by providing theoretical education on robots and PBL-based practical training, respectively.

To ensure the successful execution of the project, Hurim Robot will jointly develop a customized curriculum required for the course with Hanyang University ERICA. They will support technical education necessary for various use cases of the intelligent service robot Temi and service development. Evaluation and feedback on project outcomes will be provided jointly.

The course is offered separately for undergraduate and graduate students. Each class is divided into 5 to 6 teams composed jointly of students from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Business Administration. Each team is provided with one Temi robot, with which they develop applied service scenarios and create business models.

Since 2016, Hanyang University ERICA has introduced its competitive IC-PBL method and has been conducting classes linked with companies in various industrial fields such as intelligent robotics, system semiconductors, and energy saving. Moving away from the traditional one-way professor-student lectures, students perform practical projects based on market needs analysis in industrial sites, which is meaningful for cultivating understanding and application skills related to industry as well as practical capabilities.

A Hurim Robot official stated, “As the importance of the service robot industry gradually expands, we are highly optimistic about new business prospects through the MOU with Hanyang University ERICA, where we can observe students’ fresh ideas,” adding, “We hope this course will serve as a stepping stone to enhance understanding of industrial sites.”

Additionally, Hurim Robot plans to select teams that perform outstanding projects among the students participating in this course and award scholarships. Subsequently, through an internship program, opportunities will be provided to acquire work capabilities in industrial sites, and based on this, the intelligent robot education system will be expanded to other universities.
