Hyundai Motor to Mass-Produce Next-Generation Electric Vehicles on Dedicated Platform Starting Next Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company is set to launch its next-generation electric vehicle as early as the beginning of next year. This will be the first next-generation model applying Hyundai's dedicated electric vehicle platform (E-GMP).

According to the automotive industry on the 10th, Hyundai recently explained to the labor union its production plan for the next-generation electric vehicle (development code name NE) targeting January next year. It also revealed plans to convert Ulsan Plant 1, Line 2 into a dedicated electric vehicle production line for this purpose.

Once mass production of the NE begins, Hyundai is expected to take on a new era. Hyundai developed the E-GMP last year to apply it to next-generation electric vehicles.

Previously produced models like the Kona and Ioniq were modified from existing vehicles to electric versions. Until now, Hyundai's electric vehicles were made by removing the internal combustion engine components from conventional vehicles and installing electric motors in the space. However, the NE is expected to be the first electric vehicle utilizing the E-GMP platform designed specifically for electric vehicles, enhancing its completeness.

The NE is expected to have a high-voltage battery laid flat under the vehicle body. In previous models, the battery pack was installed under the rear seats, which had been criticized for lacking space.

Additionally, the design is likely to be based on the electric vehicle concept car '45,' which was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany last September.

A Hyundai official stated, "It is true that we held a briefing for the labor union, but details such as the launch timing and production plans have not yet been finalized."
