[Culture & Life Department Reporter Jeonghwa Choi] The multi-layered project of the Italian luxury brand Gucci, "No Space, Just a Place: Eterotopia," is being held at the Daelim Museum in Seoul until July 12.
This exhibition is part of Gucci's cultural support project initiated to support Seoul's diverse cultural landscape and contemporary art. It was planned inspired by the complex history of Seoul's independent and alternative art spaces and Alessandro Michele's reflections on Eterotopia. The exhibition presents a new definition of "other space" as a place where individuals can form new relationships with others or their surroundings, creating a desirable future different from the present.
Curated by Myriam Ben Salah, known for her progressive aesthetics, "No Space, Just a Place: Eterotopia" is based on Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele's reflections on society. In particular, the exhibition's core themes?ethical and aesthetic values regarding the relationship between genre and gender, the concept of learnscape, the urgency of self-expression, and the eternal anthropological manifesto?represent the roles and goals of alternative art spaces.
Historically, independent and alternative art spaces have been located in places outside the mainstream, such as in front of shops, upper floors of buildings, or warehouses. These spaces are political or experimental and focus on artistic discourse rather than commercial objectives, opposing the neutrality of the "white cube." Since such movements emerged in Seoul in the late 1990s, projects questioning the art ecosystem have increased sharply. The goal of this exhibition is to secure the visibility of these progressive places, reflect on autonomy, and examine the "alterity" of space as a conceptual tool to envision new narratives for the future.
For this exhibition spanning four floors of the Daelim Museum, independent art spaces were selected. Audio Visual Pavilion, Hapjungjigu, Boan1942, d/p, OF, Post Territory Ujeongguk, space illi, Space One, Tastehouse, and White Noise each present projects devised by their teams in collaboration with the curator. These include works by one or more artists represented or supported by the participating spaces.
